As a Volunteers Movement for Humanitarian Rescue our Vision is to build a dignified and self-reliant society with equal opportunities.
Our Mission
To empower and promote active participation of refugees, displaced and Vulnerable people of the host communities towards a better future.
Where we operate?
Our headquarters are based in Kakuma, Northwestern Turkana County, Kenya in East Africa. However, our reach extends far beyond this location, as we operate in several other counties across Kenya, including Turkana West, West Pokot, Nairobi, Kisumu, and Machakos.
In order to achieve our mission, we work closely with local organizations and communities to ensure that our programs are aligned with the needs and priorities of the people we serve. We believe in empowering these communities to take an active role in their own development and to shape their own futures.
Through our programs, we aim to provide refugees, displaced and vulnerable people with the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to succeed and to become active and productive members of their communities. Whether it’s through sports and games, education, or job training, we believe that everyone should have the opportunity to build a better future for themselves and their families.
Our Principles
Our principles form the cornerstone of our organization and shape our approach to humanitarian work. We take these principles very seriously, and they guide our actions in all that we do.
Humanity: At VMHR, we believe that every person has inherent value and dignity. We work to promote and protect the human rights of all individuals, without discrimination or prejudice. We believe in treating people with respect, empathy, and compassion, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Impartiality: We believe in treating all individuals equally, without regard to nationality or ethnic origins, gender, or religious or political beliefs. Our goal is to provide assistance to those who need it most, without any biasness or discrimination. We are committed to impartiality, and we strive to maintain our independence from political parties, the military, and other groups that could influence our actions.
Independence: We act independently, free from the influence of any external organizations or groups. This allows us to remain impartial, and to make decisions based on what is best for the people we serve. Our independence is a key aspect of our credibility and allows us to provide assistance to those who need it, without fear of reprimand.
Networking: We believe in working together with other organizations and agencies to achieve our goals. By networking with government and other organizations, we can leverage our resources, knowledge, and expertise to reach more people and have a greater impact.
Non-violence: We are committed to non-violence and reject any form of violence in any situation. We believe that peace and security are fundamental to the well-being of individuals and communities, and we strive to promote a culture of non-violence in all that we do.
Voluntary service: Our organization is a voluntary movement, and our volunteers are not motivated by any desire for personal gain. We believe that volunteerism is a powerful force for good, and we are committed to promoting a culture of free service and generosity. Our volunteers play a critical role in our work, and we are grateful for their commitment and dedication to helping others.
These principles are essential to our mission and guide our actions in all that we do. We believe that by adhering to these principles, we can make a positive impact in the lives of the people we serve and contribute to a more peaceful and equitable world.
Community involvement
VMHR involves the community in all aspects of its work, including agriculture, education, health, and environment. This approach helps to ensure that programs are responsive to local needs and priorities and have the greatest possible impact.
In agriculture, VMHR works with local farmers and communities to provide training and resources. In education, VMHR works with schools, teachers, and students to ensure access to quality education. In health, VMHR works with local communities to provide health education and support for community-based clinics. In the environment, VMHR promotes sustainable practices and involves local leaders in environmental decision-making. By involving the community, VMHR builds strong and sustainable communities and empowers local people to shape their own future.
